Meet Saturday Presenter Sean Fogarty

Meet Saturday Presenter Stephanie Thomas-Rees

Stephanie is an Engineered Wood Specialist at APA – The Engineered Wood Association. From her location in Central Florida, Stephanie consults with builders, designers, code officials and suppliers on using engineered wood products efficiently and cost effectively.  Stephanie is an experienced designer and energy professional with a bachelor’s degree in architectural design from Clemson University and a master’s degree in energy efficient building from Oxford Brookes University. As a building science professional, Stephanie’s past roles include project architect, energy efficiency  director, code compliance coordinator, and adjunct professor teaching high performance strategies, sustainable design and building materials.

Frame for Success (2 hour) ICC/AIA approved

This session includes an introduction to the types of engineered wood products, a discussion of their typical application in light frame construction and presents the benefits of engineered wood products.  It also examines the most common wood construction framing and sheathing errors found in today’s construction markets observed by APA staff.  It also examines the consequences of these common errors and provides practical solutions for avoiding them.

After the Storm – Building for High Wind Resistance (1 hour) ICC/AIA/CILB approved

This session will discuss structural failures observed during storm damage assessments and the behavior of wood structures during high wind events. An overview of how high wind forces work, the importance of a complete load path, and how good design and construction practices can improve the storm resistance of buildings will be provided. Both code requirements and APA’s above code recommendations which contribute to improved overall performance in the structural shell, will be discussed. They focus on good connection details and common failure modes seen in storm damage assessments and help builders cost effectively build a safer and more resilient home. By understanding key code requirements and lateral load concepts, home damage in future storms can be minimized.
